Rhyming
According to Jennings, Caldwell, & Lerner, 2014, “Chanting nursery rhymes develops phonemic awareness and the ability to rhyme” (pg. 167). Teachers can also use traditional poetry and any song. These are great resources when working with younger students. Another resource teachers can use are books that have an emphasis on rhyming. This will also help the development of phonemic awareness.
An example of how to use a rhyming book with your students:
1) Read the book to the students.
2) Reread the book but leave out the word that would complete the rhyme and have the students give you the word.Ex. It is a nice day; I would like to _________. Students will give you the word that rhymes with day that fits in the blank.
Some book recommendations that model rhyming include:

Some book recommendations that model rhyming include:
- Sheep in a Jeep and its sequels
- The Hungry Thing and its sequels
- Books by Dr. Seuss, such as One Fish, Two Fish
or Green Eggs and Ham - Older students may enjoy The New Kid on the Block
or A Light in the Attic

One way you can use nursery rhymes is in the content area of writing. After the students are introduced to nursery rhymes and rhyming books, the students can actually write their own rhyme or poem. This is a great way to integrate reading and writing. Another content area you could use rhyming with is mathematics. The poem below can be used to teach students multiplication.
As I was going to St. Ives
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
kits, cats, sacks and wives,
How many were going to St. Ives?
This is a fun way to get students engaged in mathematics.
